Career education is the broad awareness and exploration of the world of work by students. CTE is the concentrated technical development of workplace skills and behaviors, but students learn about careers and explore interests long before enrollment in CTE. Further, all students should be developing career awareness through all grade levels.

Students should have a career plan. Commissioner’s Part 100 Regulations require as part of the grades 7-12 counseling requirements to include “instruction at each grade level to help students learn about various careers and skills” conducted by school counselors, or by classroom teachers in cooperation with school counselors.

NYS has a requirement at the Middle level for instruction in Home and Career Skills and Technology Education in addition to any other CTE instruction that might be optionally offered.
