LGBTQIA Youth: Creating Safe Environments for Children

Description: School climate is composed of numerous factors, including not only the level of physical safety at school but also the extent to which members of the school community feel valued and welcomed at school.LGBTQIA students experience bullying at a higher rate than their non-LGBTQIA peers, often with serious consequences. This workshop will describe the differences between gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation to help educators build safe and positive learning spaces for all students.

Description: This interactive workshop is designed to help native English speakers adapt their English to be better understood by non-native English speakers. The first step in improving comprehensibility is to become aware of the idioms, expressions, and slang that are a natural part of native speech. By the end of this two-part workshop, participants will be able to recognize and modify their use of language to be better understood in the classroom.

Description: This interactive workshop will be based on the guidelines from the United Nations for using gender-neutral/gender-inclusive language. Participants will review the guidelines and practice modifying written and verbal statements with the goal of taking this new knowledge back to the classroom.
