Education discussions are expanding around Inclusion, Access, Equity, and Diversity (IAED). IAEDACTE has a major IAED initiative. Much of this discussion is focused on CTE adult leaders for raising awareness and taking action in teacher recruitment, student access, and teaching. However, we need to think also about these IAED goals in student learning, particularly the behaviors included in work habits and employability skills.

CTE is more than developing technical skills.  Students also develop the behaviors they need to be effective in the workplace and work toward their future goals. CTE teachers consistently give students feedback on these behaviors related to student work.  Great teachers help students grow by focusing on the positive and explicitly describing a student's behavior in specific situations. 

The Life/Career rubrics on the CTE Technical Assistance Center website are rich resources for teachers to develop a language of giving students specific feedback on work habits and behaviors. These behaviors include the obvious areas of safety, punctuality, responsibility, and teamwork. The list of potential behaviors also includes several related to inclusion, access, equity, and diversity. Teachers might find several specific behaviors helpful in helping CTE students grow in terms of inclusion and empathy. IAED's focus for student learning is not a separate curriculum but a natural extension of teaching by giving students feedback as they work on their CTE projects. 

The following are several of the performance indicators and four-level rubrics from the Life/Career database, which specifically relate to the topic of inclusion, access, equity, and diversity. Explore these tools and bring them into conversations with your CTE students.
